What is pressure-sensitive adhesive?

Pressure-sensitive adhesives combine viscosity and elasticity

First and foremost, pressure-sensitive adhesive is a type of adhesive. More specifically, it is the adhesive compound used in adhesive tape. Press-sensitive adhesives combine the viscosity of honey with the elasticity of rubber. They adhere well to a surface (adhesion) and are equally strong and rigid within themselves (cohesion). To achieve this, the adhesive compound is composed of specific raw materials.

For example, natural rubber, which can create particularly strong adhesion in the adhesive compound through the addition of resins. An adhesive tape based on natural rubber is used, for instance, for masking during painting work or for packaging cardboard boxes. If an adhesive tape needs to adhere for a particularly long time and withstand outdoor UV radiation as well as any temperature, acrylic-based pressure-sensitive adhesives are generally used. They can be adapted even better to specific requirements because acrylic consists of synthetic polymers that can be “tailored.”

How can the adhesive be applied?

Using the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX manual applicator for 38 ml / 45 ml / 47 ml / 50 ml cartridges

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX manual applicator is designed for use with 38 ml to 50 ml cartridges. The EPX system dispenses, mixes, and applies the adhesive to the materials to be bonded. The selection of mixing nozzle and feed piston depends on the adhesive. The EPX manual applicator enables mobile and independent bonding and also includes the 1:1 / 2:1 / 10:1 feed piston.

3M Adhesives and Sealants

Are polyurethane- and hybrid-based for applications in industry, automotive manufacturing, construction, and marine applications.

These one-component products protect against yellowing, cracking, chalking, and wear caused by UV radiation, and offer excellent resistance to environmental influences. In industry, Power Line adhesives and sealants are suitable, for example, in metalworking or for products that must be hermetically sealed.

Flexibility keeps you moving—even in automotive manufacturing: in a wide range of applications, the use of 3M adhesives and sealants leads to lighter products with outstanding performance characteristics and lower costs. In the construction industry, 3M helps reduce costs and increase productivity.

The range of applications extends from control joints in concrete to use in ventilated facades. Tried and tested, the Power Line products for the marine sector ensure durable and flexible bonds even in the face of waves, salt water, and sun.
